In honor of Earth Month, we’re highlighting the sustainable farming practices behind our matcha.
At Matchaful, our mission to take care of ourselves, each other, and our planet begins at our roots—matcha. Hannah founded Matchaful in part due to the lack of sourcing transparency and organic matcha available in the US. This commitment to sustainability and transparency is our guiding principle and laid the groundwork for the farms we choose as partners. Today, all Matchaful matcha is free of both pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Our range also includes USDA certified organic and solar-panel shaded teas.
The Matcha Farm as a Solar Farm
What do we mean by solar-panel shaded tea? In the traditional matcha growing process, tencha is shaded during the final stage of growth to both concentrate nutrients and achieve a balanced flavor profile. While searching for a sustainable farming partner in Japan, Hannah met a family farmer in Shizuoka that used solar panels to shade his tencha. The energy generated by these solar panels in turn supplies power to both the farm and nearby town. With this strategic decision, he created an effective closed-loop energy solution for his farm and the neighboring community. These practices encompassed exactly what Hannah was searching for, and this partnership led to the creation of Matchaful’s Single-Origin line.Try our Kiwami Super Ceremonial Matcha to experience how this sustainable practice translates into a delicate, vibrant green, and overall superior matcha.
Clean Farming
Continuing this closed-loop strategy, our partner farm utilizes organic compost from the local community to encourage healthy growth instead of synthetic fertilizers. Composting is a centuries-old method harnessing naturally occurring decomposition processes to turn agricultural and food waste into fertilizer. Not only does this system divert organic waste from landfills, but it ensures that all our matcha is free of chemical fertilizer residue.
To ensure the ongoing integrity of our matcha, all Matchaful teas undergo rigorous annual testing at an independent lab to confirm they are 100% pesticide-free and show no fertilizer residue. Our lab tests for over 300 compounds, including heavy metals and radiation. You can view our quality control reports on our website.
Years later, we’re proud to say that our original commitment to sourcing transparency and sustainability has not waivered. Whether you shop matcha, granola, or chocolate, you can trust that it is 100% clean.
